Dream number 243 in Dream Diary - 01/07/09: I had this dream in 2009 which seems to predict a breakthrough led by the French - COP21. "I came late to the negotiations with lots of ideas and began telling the assembled room of high level government ministers what I thought. Sat next to me was the French minister. He nudged me and from under the desk he produced a well written comprehensive plan to deal with the carbon pollution problem. It was such an excellent plan that I was blown away by it. I sat back and let him take over. As I looked across at the dossier I could see maps of heat and carbon over-laid, over time. It clearly showed the economic and practical solutions needed. I tried to argue that these were only predictions and could not be relied upon. But I had to admit it was stunning in its simplicity."

I half expected a film about the terrible side effects of modern psychiatric drugs – a kind documentary style film about the pharmaceutical industry. Even though it was actually a thriller, I wasn’t too disappointed. This is a clever film, with twists and turns, some of which I guessed, most of which I didn’t. Catherine Zeta-Jones, not my favourite actress, put in an excellent performance, capturing the scheming and patronising psychiatrist manipulating Jude Law and using the vulnerable, but mentally unstable siren, Rooney Mara; an actress I have not seen before in any other films. Steven Soderburgh has once again, presented an interesting, topical film, which isn’t over cooked, nor is it boring or clichéd. It is also another great moment for British actors working in the US. This film was heavily slated by many of the reviews I have read and some friends didn’t say nice things about it either. I enjoyed most of this high octane action thriller. It was a great study of what a direct attack on the White House might look like and how a terrorist group might exploit weaknesses in the White House’s defence systems. Sometimes it’s is all too easy to assume that a major iconic building is secure, such has been demonstrated in recent years by people breaking into Buckingham Palace, including one man who entered the Queen’s bedroom and chatted with her for several minutes, before being carted off. However it is not the weaknesses in the White House which really defines whether this film is good or bad. It is the weaknesses in the plot. Boring! Actually after being a little bored with this film, it moved on into unexpected storylines, which proved to be very delicate, intricate and emotional. The film focuses on Luke (Ryan Gosling), who is a stunt biker, moving around the country with a circus. When he stops in a town he stayed in before, he bumps into an old flame, whom he had a fling with the year before. He quickly discovers that he has fathered a child, a young boy with her. He immediately quits his job and plans to stay. But he wants to muscle in on her new relationship. When this badly back fires, he goes looking for money and gets an offer from his new employer who persuades him to carry out a series of bank robberies. When one of the robberies goes wrong he gets killed by a Police officer, leaving behind his young son. The story unfolds from here, and looks intelligently at the longer term consequences. I really wanted to see this film at the cinema and never got to. After reports from my brother, who did see it at the cinema, that it wasn’t that good, I had an inkling that I may enjoy it more than him, as our tastes in films are slightly at odds. Having said all this, it was almost one of those films that I could sink into and immerse myself in and forget that I am just a lowly viewer sitting at home in front of the box, and push myself into the scenario, no matter how far-fetched. Tom Cruise obviously has a habit of choosing the films he appears in very carefully and apart from the Last Samurai, there hasn’t been I film of his I haven’t liked.
